Layering Tips to Keep Your Kids Warm This Winter

Layering is an essential part of dressing up your child for cold weather. It helps keep them warm and comfortable when they're active outdoors.

Layering refers to wearing multiple layers of clothing to stay warm without looking too bulky. Layering will keep kids warm in the cold weather and allows them to shed some layers when the temperature gets warmer.

Layering isn’t just about choosing random clothing to put on in layers. It also requires some planning so that your kids will feel comfortable and look fashionable with the layered outfit.

We've put together some tips on how to layer your kid's clothing this season. These will help ensure they stay warm and dry while enjoying the great outdoors.

Layer From Base To Outer

When layering your kids' outfits, start with a base layer. This layer is going to stay closest to the skin, so ensure to choose a soft fabric that keeps sweat away from the skin.

Samples of good base layers are a turtleneck sweater or a thermal shirt. Add a second layer that will regulate the body temperature, such as a fleece jacket or a zip-up hoodie. Finish off with an outer layer, such as a water-resistant polyester middle layer. This will protect your child from wind and snow and allow some perspiration to escape.

Choose Colors That Match Or Contrast Each Other.

When layering kids' outfits, choose colors that complement each other. This will make your child’s clothes more attractive and will highlight your child’s natural beauty. Colors that go well together are opposite each other on the color wheel, called complementary colors. Samples of these colors are red and green.

More Ways To Keep Warm

  • Sleeves help keep children warm by trapping air between the skin and the outer layer. They also protect against wind chill.
  • Don’t forget to cover up their hands, feet, necks, and ears too. Some great ways to keep them covered up are scarves, hats, gloves, heavy socks, and waterproof shoes. These items help protect against the elements and add interest and variety to your child’s wardrobe.
  • If it’s really cold, thermal leggings will add an additional layer of warmth.
